Kicking off the Detroit Auto Show, the Cadillac ATS was just named the 2013 North American Car of the Year.
Cadillac competed against the Honda Accord and Ford Fusion to take the title, but it’s hard to argue against the decision. Both the Accord and Fusion are well received new models, but the ATS is arguably the new benchmark for the compact luxury sedan.

“This is a very meaningful honor for the entire Cadillac team, especially the men and women who build the ATS in Lansing, Michigan, and our dedicated and talented designers and engineers,” said Bob Ferguson, GM vice president, global Cadillac. “A car like ATS is the result of incredible commitment and focus. That’s the only method for creating a great performing luxury car.”

Offered with three engine options – a 2.5-liter inline four cylinder, 2.0-liter turbo four and 3.6-liter V6 – the ATS can be had in either rear- or all-wheel drive and is aimed at cars like the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4.
But aside from current engine options, there is more to come for the 2013 Car of the Year. Specifically, the automaker is expected to offer a diesel variant, although a timeline hasn’t been disclosed.
